Monumental Sculpture Arrived May 17th

sculpt3The 25 foot tall “A Turn of the Century” sculpture arrived in Auburn on May  17th. Rob Mays and Nick Valenza from the Johnson Atelier Workshop in New  Jersey spent three days in Auburn erecting the monumental sculpture, sealing the seams and repainting the piece. The two craftsmen travel  around the country installing the works of Seward Johnson. They will be installing  the monumental “God Bless America” on the grounds at the Indiana State Fair later this summer.

City crews assisted in the process providing heavy equipment and expertise in lifting the pieces into place and securing them to the metal framework  which supports them.

American sculptor Seward Johnson’s “A Turn of the Century” featuring figures from a Renoir painting, will “reside” at Seventh and Jackson streets in Auburn, through September 15, 2010. The monumental sculpture depicts the couple in realistic detail but in outsized proportion, down to the folds in their period clothing.

The remaining 12 life-sized statues in the  exhibit are expected to arrive about June 10. The collection includes depictions of the famous farm couple from the painting, “American Gothic,” and the WWII sailor kissing a nurse from a Life Magazine photograph, as well as people doing everyday activities such as painting, reading or playing  guitar. The walking tour route will encompass the picturesque courthouse square  and the historic Eckhart Public Library, 603 S.Jackson St., which is  celebrating its centennial year
